Dr. Red's Virtual Labs

Complex engineering concepts become more accessible through experimentation.

Our virtual lab is designed with a simple interface for interactive online learning. Dr. Red's Virtual Labs serves as a complement to traditional educational methods, and is well suited for both in-class and on-line teaching. Personal and group assignments are supported. Data from virtual experiments can be downloaded in Excel and Matlab formats.

Chemical kinetics

The best way to learn about reaction kinetics is by supplementing the theory with exploration and processing of own experimental results.

Ideal reactors

Get access to individual ideal reactors and their simple series combinations. Experiment with liquid phase and gas phase reactions, with or without a catalyst, and isothermal and adiabatic reactors.

All reactors can be operated in unsteady state, so that startup behavior can be observed.

Adsorption

Seeing an adsorption column in action helps to grasp the complex dynamics of this periodically operated separation process.

Study the loading, regeneration and washing steps one by one or as a complete process cycle.

A batch adsorption tank is available for studying adsorption equilibria and kinetics.

Chromatography

Study linear and non-linear chromatography with up to six compounds in the feed mixture.

The effects of particle size and flow rate are best observed by running own experiments.

The adsorbent is not magically regenerated, so the compounds must be eluted properly. This allows determining isotherms with the frontal analysis method or studying complex multistep processes.
